Psalm 133:1
1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
Romans 12:3-10
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Nehemiah 2:16-18
16 The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.
17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” 18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.
They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work. 1
📜 Historical Anecdote This Week
United for a Great Cause
On a warm summer in Philadelphia, fifty-six ordinary yet determined men would place their names beneath an extraordinary document: the Declaration of Independence. By approving and later signing it, they were doing far more than endorsing a political statement—they were publicly renouncing their allegiance to the British Crown and risking prosecution for high treason if the Revolution failed.
Many had families to protect, businesses and estates to lose, and comfortable lives they could have preserved by remaining silent. Instead, they chose duty over safety, convinced that the unalienable rights with which all men are endowed by their Creator were worth defending at any cost.
The Declaration closes with one of the greatest pledges ever written:
“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” ²
These were not empty words. During the Revolutionary War, several signers saw their homes occupied or destroyed, suffered financial ruin, served in the field at great personal risk, endured imprisonment, or watched members of their families experience hardship because of their commitment to the cause. They counted liberty more valuable than comfort and honor more precious than riches.
Their example reminds us that true liberty has always required courage, sacrifice, and a firm reliance upon God’s providence. The blessings we enjoy today were secured by men willing to risk everything for principles they believed were grounded in the laws of nature and of nature’s God.
🏛️ Wisdom Through the Ages
Excerpt from Matthew Henry and His Bible Commentary
Reflecting on the Book of Nehemiah, Rev. Henry discussed Nehemiah getting his commission from the Persian king for rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem with the help of his people who lived there. He says…
"They presently came to a resolution, one and all, to concur with him: 'Let us rise up and build.' They are ashamed that they have sat still so long... and now resolve to stir up one another... So they strengthened their hands, their own and one another's, for this good work.” 4
Henry reminds us that God's work advances when His people encourage one another, labor together, and trust His providence.
