Proverbs 22:6
6 Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
Deuteronomy 6:4-13
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
13 Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.
Hosea 4:6
6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
“Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law of your God,
I also will ignore your children.1
📜 Historical Anecdote This Week
Educating and Stewarding the Next Generation
In August 1786, nearly a year before the Northwest Ordinance was adopted, Thomas Jefferson wrote to his longtime mentor and former law professor, George Wythe, about what he believed was the greatest safeguard of a free republic.
It was education.
Jefferson argued that "the diffusion of knowledge among the people" was "the most important bill in our whole code," because an educated people are the surest foundation of freedom and happiness. To him, education was not merely about acquiring knowledge—it was about preparing citizens capable of governing themselves wisely and preserving the blessings they had inherited. If future generations were left in ignorance, liberty itself would eventually be lost.
His appeal to Wythe was simple yet profound:
“Preach... a crusade against ignorance; establish & improve the law for educating the common people.” 2
Nearly 240 years later, Jefferson’s warning remains as relevant as ever. Every generation must decide whether it will faithfully pass on truth, wisdom, and virtue—or allow them to fade into forgetfulness.

Excerpt from Matthew Henry and His Bible Commentary
Reflecting on Genesis 37:1-4, Rev. Henry opens the start of Joseph’s chapter with him growing up and working with his father, Jacob, and his brothers. He says…
“Joseph, a shepherd, feeding the flock with his brethren, v. 2. Though he was his father’s darling, yet he was not brought up in idleness or delicacy. Those do not truly love their children that do not inure them to business, and labour, and mortification. The fondling of children is with good reason commonly called the spoiling of them. Those that are trained up to do nothing are likely to be good for nothing.” 5
