⁶In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. ⁷For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, ⁸nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. ⁹We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. ¹⁰For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”

¹¹We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. ¹²Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. ¹³And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.

¹⁴Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. ¹⁵Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.

Colossians 3:22-25

²²Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. ²³Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, ²⁴since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ²⁵Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism. ¹

The Work Before Him: Eli Whitney and the Discipline of a Calling

Well before there was the invention known as the cotton gin, there was a young boy named Eli Whitney. Born in 1765, the year the Stamp Act was passed by Parliament, he was a child during the Revolutionary fervor that swept across the thirteen British colonies. The son of “the middle class in society, who, by the labors of husbandry, managed, by uniform industry and strict frugality, to provide well for a rising family,” he naturally learned from his parents specifically through his father having a workshop with various tools.

His mother would die while he was young and at the age of thirteen his father remarried. Whitney’s stepmother had a set of knives that he admired and stated he could make some like that, and she was rather insulted because he was so young. However when one broke, he replaced it exactly without the maker’s mark from the original.

By fifteen or sixteen, he had continued in his skills and realized that nails were in such high demand, being during the time of the Revolutionary War, and yet they were all made by hand. With his father’s consent, he set out to make the manufacturing for them, getting skilled ever more in the trade, and gained his own tools.

“By extraordinary diligence, he gained time to make tools for his own use, and to put in knife blades, and to perform many other curious little jobs, which exceeded the skill of the country artisans. At this laborious occupation, the enterprising boy wrought alone, with great success, and with much profit to his father, for two winters, pursuing the ordinary labors of the farm during the summers. At this time he devised a plan for enlarging his business and increasing his profits. He whispered his scheme to his sister, with strong injunctions of secrecy: and requesting leave of his father to go to a neighboring town, without specifying his object, he set out on horseback in quest of a fellow laborer. Not finding one so easily as he had anticipated, he proceeded from town to town, with a perseverance which was always a strong trait of his character, until at the distance of forty miles from home, he found such a workman as he desired. He also made his journey subservient to his improvement in mechanical skill, for he called at every workshop on his way, and gleaned all the information he could respecting the mechanic arts.”

“At the close of the war, the business of making nails was no longer profitable” ²and he was on to the next venture. From bonnet pins, walking canes, various mechanical items, an embroidery frame for Mrs. Greene, and toys for children, he was a mechanical genius of a man. Years later, Whitney's ingenuity would produce the cotton gin, which dramatically increased the profitability and scalability of short-staple cotton, contributing to the enormous expansion of cotton cultivation and the expansion and entrenchment of slavery in the American South. Though his invention would become deeply intertwined with the expansion of slavery, Whitney's story began much earlier—with a young man learning to use faithfully the abilities and opportunities immediately before him.

Excerpt from Matthew Henry and His Bible Commentary

Reflecting on Paul’s teaching concerning work, diligence, and personal responsibility, Rev. Henry discusses the Christian’s duty to faithfully pursue his calling, labor diligently, and avoid idleness.

“It is the will of God that every man should have a calling, and mind his calling, and make a business of it, and that none should live like useless drones in the world. Such persons do what in them lies to defeat the sentence, In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread. It was not the mere humour of the apostle, who was an active stirring man himself and therefore would have every body else to be so too, but it was the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness we work, and eat our own bread, v. 12. Men ought some way or other to earn their own living, otherwise they do not eat their own bread. Observe, There must be work or labour, in opposition to idleness; and there must be quietness, in opposition to being busy-bodies in other men’s matters. We must study to be quiet, and do our own business. This is an excellent but rare composition, to be of an active yet quiet spirit, active in our own business and yet quiet as to other people’s.

(3.) He exhorts those that did well not to be weary in well-doing (v. 13); as if he had said, “Go on and prosper. The Lord is with you while you are with him. See that whatever you do, that is good, you persevere therein. Hold on your way, and hold out to the end. You must never give over, nor tire in your work. It will be time enough to rest when you come to heaven, that everlasting rest which remains for the people of God.” ⁴

"And, as Poor Richard likewise observes, He that hath a Trade hath an Estate, and He that hath a Calling hath an Office of Profit and Honour; but then the Trade must be worked at, and the Calling well followed, or neither the Estate, nor the Office, will enable us to pay our Taxes. If we are industrious we shall never starve; for, as Poor Richard says, At the working Man’s House Hunger looks in, but dares not enter. Nor will the Bailiff nor the Constable enter, for Industry pays Debts, while Despair encreaseth them, says Poor Richard. What though you have found no Treasure, nor has any rich Relation left you a Legacy, Diligence is the Mother of Good luck, as Poor Richard says, and God gives all Things to Industry. Then plough deep, while Sluggards sleep, and you shall have Corn to sell and to keep, says Poor Dick. Work while it is called To-day, for you know not how much you may be hindered To-morrow, which makes Poor Richard say, One To-day is worth two Tomorrows; and farther, Have you somewhat to do To-morrow, do it To-day. If you were a Servant, would you not be ashamed that a good Master should catch you idle? Are you then your own Master, be ashamed to catch yourself idle, as Poor Dick says. When there is so much to be done for yourself, your Family, your Country, and your gracious King, be up by Peep of Day; Let not the Sun look down and say, Inglorious here he lies. Handle your Tools without Mittens; remember that the Cat in Gloves catches no Mice, as Poor Richard says. ’Tis true there is much to be done, and perhaps you are weak handed, but stick to it steadily, and you will see great Effects, for constant Dropping wears away Stones, and by Diligence and Patience the Mouse ate in two the Cable; and little Strokes fell great Oaks, as Poor Richard says in his Almanack, the Year I cannot just now remember."

The Way to Wealth

By Benjamin Franklin

First published in 1758, The Way to Wealth is one of Benjamin Franklin’s most enduring works. Presented through the sayings of “Poor Richard,” Franklin gathers practical wisdom on work, thrift, industry, time, debt, and the proper use of money.

Though written more than two centuries ago, its central lessons remain remarkably relevant. Franklin understood that prosperity was not simply a matter of earning more—it was a matter of developing the habits and character necessary to use what we have wisely.

His advice is direct: time is valuable, debt can become a master, idleness carries a cost, and steady industry produces results.

The Art of Stewardship and the Game of Business

The American businessman and philanthropist John Davison Rockefeller was born in Richford, New York, in 1839 and grew up in modest circumstances. As a young man he developed habits that would remain with him throughout his life: careful accounting, disciplined saving, hard work, and a deep concern with where money went. In 1855, at only sixteen years old, he left school and found work as a bookkeeper in Cleveland. He quickly demonstrated an unusual ability to understand the financial side of business. Rockefeller did not initially dream of becoming the wealthiest American of his age; rather, he learned to treat business as something requiring order, discipline, patience, and careful stewardship. His career eventually led him into the oil industry, where he and his partners built what became the Standard Oil Company.

Rockefeller’s rise, however, was not without controversy. Standard Oil became enormously powerful, and Rockefeller’s methods of consolidation and control made him one of the most criticized businessmen in American history. His enormous fortune made him a symbol of the Gilded Age itself. Yet Rockefeller did not regard the accumulation of wealth as an end in itself. His religious convictions profoundly influenced the way he understood money. The famous statement attributed to him—that he believed the power to make money was “a gift of God” to be developed and used “for the good of mankind”—was reported in John T. Flynn’s God’s Gold (1932), where Flynn attributed it to an interview with William Hoster. Because the original interview transcript has not been located, it is best to identify Flynn’s book as the source rather than present the quotation as though we possess a surviving primary transcript.

There is, however, a primary-source foundation for this understanding of Rockefeller’s philosophy. In his own Random Reminiscences of Men and Events, published in 1909, Rockefeller reflected extensively upon both “the difficult art of getting” and “the difficult art of giving.” He described his business principles, the development of Standard Oil, and his later approach to philanthropy. The very structure of his memoir is revealing: Rockefeller placed the making of wealth and the giving of wealth within the same story. His own words and actions show a man who believed that financial ability brought responsibility with it. His fortune eventually funded enormous philanthropic efforts in education, medicine, public health, and other fields.

This brings Rockefeller’s story directly into the lesson of Matthew 25:14–30, where Christ tells of servants entrusted with different talents by their master. Rockefeller’s life therefore presents an intriguing historical case study in stewardship. His extraordinary financial abilities produced extraordinary wealth, but wealth itself did not answer the question of what that wealth was for. The Christian principle is more demanding than merely becoming successful: whatever God entrusts to us—money, ability, opportunity, knowledge, influence, or time—is ultimately something for which we are accountable to Him. The art of stewardship is therefore not simply the art of acquiring; it is the art of faithfully multiplying, wisely preserving, generously giving, and ultimately returning to the Master an account of what we did with what He placed in our hands.

Excerpt from Matthew Henry and His Bible Commentary

Reflecting on the Parable of the Talents, Rev. Henry discusses the parallel between master and his servants with Christ and His followers.

“The Master is Christ, who is the absolute Owner and Proprietor of all persons and things…The servants are Christians, his own servants, so they are called; born in his house, bought with his money, devoted to his praise, and employed in his work…The trust committed to these servants; Their master delivered to them his goods: having appointed them to work (for Christ keeps no servants to be idle), he left them something to work upon. Note, 1. Christ’s servants have and receive their all from him; for they are of themselves worth nothing, nor have any thing they can call their own but sin. 2. Our receiving from Christ is in order to our working for him. Our privileges are intended to find us with business. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 3. Whatever we receive to be made use of for Christ, still the property is vested in him; we are but tenants upon his land, stewards of his manifold grace, 1 Pt. 4:10. Now observe here…When Christ went to heaven, he was as a man travelling into a far country; that is, he went with a purpose to be away a great while. [2.] When he went, he took care to furnish his church with all things necessary for it during his personal absence. For, and in consideration of, his departure, he committed to his church truths, laws, promises and powers; these were the parakatatheµkeµ—the great depositum (as it is called, 1 Tim. 6:20; 2 Tim. 1:14), the good thing that is committed to us; and he sent his Spirit to enable his servants to teach and profess those truths, to press and observe those laws, to improve and apply those promises, and to exercise and employ those powers, ordinary or extraordinary. The Pursuit of Knowledge and God Honoring Worship

In the 1300s, John Wycliffe became one of England’s most important critics of the growing power of the papacy. He believed that the Church should be faithful to Jesus Christ and the teachings of Scripture, rather than allowing the pope and church authorities to exercise power beyond what Scripture permitted. His teachings challenged both religious and political authority, bringing him into conflict with church leaders.

Wycliffe believed that Christians needed to know the Bible for themselves. With the help of his followers, the Bible was translated into English so that ordinary people could hear and read God’s Word in their own language. Wycliffe and those who followed his teachings faced opposition and condemnation, but his influence continued throughout England through the Lollards movement, who preached and taught from Scripture.

“A great change was now taking place in the reformer. Busying himself less about the kingdom of England, he occupied himself more about the kingdom of Christ. In him the political phasis was followed by the religious. To carry the glad tidings of the gospel into the remotest hamlets was now the great idea which possessed Wickliffe. If begging friars, said he, stroll over the country preaching the legions of saints and the history of the Trojan war, we must do for God’s glory what they do to fill their wallets, and form a vast itinerant evangelization to convert souls to Jesus Christ. Turning to the most pious of his disciples he said to them, “Go and preach; it is the sublimest work; but imitate not the priest whom we see after the sermon sitting in the alehouses, or at the gaming-table, or wasting their time in hunting. After your sermon is ended, do you visit the sick, the aged, the poor, the blind, and the lame, and succor [support] them according to your ability.” Such was a new practical theology which Wickliffe inaugurated-it was that of Christ himself.” ²

The later Church of England did not yet exist, so it would be inaccurate to call Wycliffe an Anglican. However, his movement became part of the longer history of English Christianity that became part of the longer story of English religious reform. At the heart of his work was a simple conviction: Christ is the head of His Church, and God’s people need to know and follow His Word.

The Wycliffite manuscript pictured here reminds us that God’s Word was preserved and passed from one generation to another. Wycliffe’s story therefore fits the message of this week’s Scripture: we must not forget what we have received, but faithfully learn it, live it, and pass it on to those who come after us. We must not change or distort God’s Word for our benefit or for the harm of those around us for our personal control, but we preach and live it faithfully as a pleasing aroma to the Father.

Reflecting on Hosea 4:6, Matthew Henry discusses the destruction that comes when God’s people reject knowledge.

“Note, Those that rebel against the light can expect no other than to perish in the dark. Or it is a charge upon the priests, who should have been still teaching the people knowledge (Eccl. 12:9), but they did not, or did it in such a manner that it was as if they had not done it at all, so there was no knowledge of God in the land; and because there was no vision, or none to any purpose, the people perished, Prov. 29:18. Note, Ignorance is so far from being the mother of devotion that it is the mother of destruction; lack of knowledge is ruining to any person or people. They are my people that are thus destroyed; their relation to God as his people aggravates both their sin in not taking pains to get the knowledge of that God whose command they were under and with whom they were taken into covenant, and likewise the sin of those who should have taught them; God set his children to school to them, and they never minded them nor took any pains with them.” ⁴

Romans 13:1-5

¹Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. ²Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. ³For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. ⁴For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. 📜 Historical Anecdote This Week

A Framework for a Community

On November 11, 1620, before setting foot upon the shores of what would become New England, the Pilgrims and other passengers aboard the Mayflower recognized a problem that every community eventually faces: people living together need order, authority, and laws.

Their destination was Virginia, but circumstances had brought them far north of their intended settlement landing at the tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Rather than allowing uncertainty and disagreement to fracture the company, forty-one of the adult male passengers agreed to establish a civil government for the sake of their common good.

The document they signed became known as the Mayflower Compact.

It was remarkably brief. Yet within its few sentences was a significant principle of self-government, creating the first document to establish self government in the New World. The signers first acknowledged their allegiance to “our dread Sovereign Lord King James” and then stated their purpose: to “covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick.”

They agreed to enact such “just and equal Laws” as would be considered most suitable for the “general Good of the Colony,” promising “all due Submission and Obedience.” ²

The Compact did not declare that every individual could simply do whatever he pleased. Nor did it treat government as something inherently opposed to liberty. Instead, the signers recognized that ordered liberty required both legitimate authority and willing obedience to just laws.

Their words also reveal something important about the Christian understanding of civil society. The Pilgrims did not see their political community as existing merely for individual advantage. They bound themselves together for the common good, acknowledging that freedom requires responsibility and that a community cannot endure without a willingness among its members to submit to lawful authority.

The Mayflower Compact therefore presents a picture of government not as an end in itself, but as an instrument for maintaining order and pursuing the good of the community, ultimately recognizing the necessity of establishing government.

Excerpt from the Federalist Papers

In Federalist No. 51, published in 1788 under the pseudonym “Publius,” James Madison observed that “if men were angels, no government would be necessary,” capturing the Founders’ understanding of human nature and the necessity of limiting the power of government itself. He states…

“Ambition must be made to counteract ambition. The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.” ⁴

Together, the Pilgrims’ and Madison’s ideas point toward a central principle of ordered liberty: a free people need both the virtue to govern themselves and the wisdom to restrain those who govern them.

Just remember that though the world’s authority may change from time to time, God’s authority does not, and His reign never ends - we have hope!

Esther 4:1, 4-17

¹When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly.

⁴When Esther’s eunuchs and female attendants came and told her about Mordecai, she was in great distress. She sent clothes for him to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them. ⁵Then Esther summoned Hathak, one of the king’s eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why.

⁶So Hathak went out to Mordecai in the open square of the city in front of the king’s gate. ⁷Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews. ⁸He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict for their annihilation, which had been published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain it to her, and he told him to instruct her to go into the king’s presence to beg for mercy and plead with him for her people.

⁹Hathak went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. ¹⁰Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, ¹¹“All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter to them and spares their lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.”

¹²When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, ¹³he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. ¹⁴For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

¹⁵Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: ¹⁶“Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

¹⁷So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther’s instructions. ¹

📜 Historical Anecdote This Week

The Furnace of Affliction

In 1776, American patriots faced a decision that could cost them everything. Choosing independence meant risking their lives, homes, livelihoods, property, and families. If the Revolution failed, those who openly resisted British authority could face imprisonment, execution, or the loss of everything they possessed.

Thomas Jefferson later reflected on what might have happened if Americans had allowed fear to govern them. He asked what would have become of the country “if our country, when pressed with wrongs at the point of the bayonet, had been governed by its heads instead of its hearts.” His answer was chilling: “where should we have been now? hanging on a gallows as high as Haman’s.” ²

Yet thousands of Americans continued to serve, fight, provide supplies, endure hardship, and support the cause of independence. They did not know whether the Revolution would succeed. They knew only that they believed liberty was worth the sacrifice, and like Queen Esther, they took the risk even if it meant their lives.

John Adams understood that such trials could shape the character of a people. He wrote, “The Furnace of Affliction produces Refinement, in States as well as Individuals.” He believed that the hardships of the Revolution could purify the nation’s vices and strengthen its virtues—but only if Americans allowed suffering to make them better rather than bitter.

Adams ultimately recognized that the future was beyond human control. He therefore submitted his “Hopes and Fears, to an overruling Providence, in which, unfashionable as the Faith may be, I firmly believe.” ³

The American patriots could not see how their story would end. They could only choose how they would live through the trial.

Their example reminds us that the furnace of affliction can reveal character, refine virtue, and teach a people to place its hopes not merely in itself, but in the providence of God.

Mayer’s scene evokes the hardship endured by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, when American soldiers faced cold, hunger, exhaustion, and uncertainty in the struggle for independence. Their sacrifices reflect John Adams’s observation that “The Furnace of Affliction produces Refinement, in States as well as Individuals.” ⁴

Reflecting on the Book of Esther, Rev. Henry discussed Mordecai and Esther’s messages they exchanged, with Mordecai arguing a providential plan taking place. He says…

“That divine Providence had an eye to this in bringing her to be queen: "Who knows whether thou hast come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”…..Now, [1.] It appeared, by the event, that she did come to the kingdom that she might be an instrument of the Jews’ deliverance, so that Mordecai was right in the conjecture. Because the Lord loved his people, therefore he made Esther queen. There is a wise counsel and design in all the providences of God, which is unknown to us till it is accomplished, but it will prove, in the issue, that they are all intended for, and centre in, the good of the church.” ⁵

Rev. Henry’s words of wisdom can be sum up into what Dr. David Martin said, “God doesn’t just call people, he positions them.” ⁶

📜 Historical Anecdote This Week

United for a Great Cause

On a warm summer in Philadelphia, fifty-six ordinary yet determined men would place their names beneath an extraordinary document: the Declaration of Independence. By approving and later signing it, they were doing far more than endorsing a political statement—they were publicly renouncing their allegiance to the British Crown and risking prosecution for high treason if the Revolution failed.

Many had families to protect, businesses and estates to lose, and comfortable lives they could have preserved by remaining silent. Instead, they chose duty over safety, convinced that the unalienable rights with which all men are endowed by their Creator were worth defending at any cost.

The Declaration closes with one of the greatest pledges ever written:

“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” ²

These were not empty words. During the Revolutionary War, several signers saw their homes occupied or destroyed, suffered financial ruin, served in the field at great personal risk, endured imprisonment, or watched members of their families experience hardship because of their commitment to the cause. They counted liberty more valuable than comfort and honor more precious than riches.

Their example reminds us that true liberty has always required courage, sacrifice, and a firm reliance upon God’s providence. The blessings we enjoy today were secured by men willing to risk everything for principles they believed were grounded in the laws of nature and of nature’s God.

"With a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence..." The Committee of Five presents the draft Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress on June 28, 1776, as depicted in John Trumbull's famous painting. Within the following weeks, the fifty-six delegates who eventually signed the Declaration pledged "their Lives, their Fortunes and their sacred Honor" in support of American independence.³

Excerpt from Matthew Henry and His Bible Commentary

Reflecting on the Book of Nehemiah, Rev. Henry discussed Nehemiah getting his commission from the Persian king for rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem with the help of his people who lived there. He says…

"They presently came to a resolution, one and all, to concur with him: 'Let us rise up and build.' They are ashamed that they have sat still so long... and now resolve to stir up one another... So they strengthened their hands, their own and one another's, for this good work.” ⁴

Henry reminds us that God's work advances when His people encourage one another, labor together, and trust His providence.

Educating and Stewarding the Next Generation

In August 1786, nearly a year before the Northwest Ordinance was adopted, Thomas Jefferson wrote to his longtime mentor and former law professor, George Wythe, about what he believed was the greatest safeguard of a free republic.

It was education.

Jefferson argued that "the diffusion of knowledge among the people" was "the most important bill in our whole code," because an educated people are the surest foundation of freedom and happiness. To him, education was not merely about acquiring knowledge—it was about preparing citizens capable of governing themselves wisely and preserving the blessings they had inherited. If future generations were left in ignorance, liberty itself would eventually be lost.

His appeal to Wythe was simple yet profound:

“Preach... a crusade against ignorance; establish & improve the law for educating the common people.” ²

Nearly 240 years later, Jefferson’s warning remains as relevant as ever. Every generation must decide whether it will faithfully pass on truth, wisdom, and virtue—or allow them to fade into forgetfulness.

Children gather for instruction in a one-room schoolhouse, reflecting the importance of education in nineteenth-century America. While painted after the Founding Era, Winslow Homer's Country School captures the enduring ideal that an educated and virtuous people are essential to the preservation of liberty. ³

“Joseph, a shepherd, feeding the flock with his brethren, v. 2. Though he was his father’s darling, yet he was not brought up in idleness or delicacy. Those do not truly love their children that do not inure them to business, and labour, and mortification. The fondling of children is with good reason commonly called the spoiling of them. Those that are trained up to do nothing are likely to be good for nothing.” ⁵

From the American Revolution Story (Part 2)

The March to Valley Forge, December 19, 1777 (1883), by William B. T. Trego. General George Washington leads the Continental Army toward its winter encampment at Valley Forge, where months of hardship, perseverance, and renewed discipline would prepare the army for future victory. When General George Washington led the Continental Army into winter quarters at Valley Forge in December 1777, the army faced one of its darkest seasons. Thousands of soldiers lacked adequate clothing, blankets, and shoes. Disease spread rapidly through the encampment, and nearly two thousand men would die before spring.

Yet amid suffering, the army did not collapse. Washington remained with his soldiers throughout the winter, sharing in their hardships while continually urging Congress for supplies and encouraging the army to persevere. At the same time, Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben arrived to begin the disciplined training that transformed the Continental Army into a more effective fighting force.

When spring finally came, the army that marched out of Valley Forge was stronger in discipline, confidence, and resolve than the one that had entered. Only days after leaving winter quarters, Washington reminded his soldiers that military success alone was not enough:

“While we are zealously performing the duties of good Citizens and soldiers we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of Religion—To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian—The signal Instances of providential Goodness which we have experienced and which have now almost crowned our labours with complete Success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of Gratitude & Piety to the Supreme Author of all Good.”

Rebuilding the Ruins

For more than a century, the story of the Pilgrims’ journey was separated from the land where it began. William Bradford's handwritten manuscript of Of Plimoth Plantation—the firsthand account of Plymouth Colony's struggles, faith, and perseverance—disappeared from Boston's Old South Church during the American Revolution and was later discovered in the library of the Bishop of London at Fulham Palace.

The manuscript remained in England and largely unknown to Americans until historian John Wingate Thornton helped bring attention to its location in 1855. After decades of effort, the treasured record was finally returned to Massachusetts in 1897, where it was placed in the care of the Commonwealth and preserved for future generations.

Bradford wrote his history not simply as a record of events, but as a testimony to God’s providence through hardship. Reflecting on the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World, he described their journey as one undertaken “having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith.” Their settlement was built not merely upon survival, but upon faith—a conviction that future generations should inherit both liberty and biblical truth.

The return of Bradford’s manuscript reminds us that preserving the past is itself an act of stewardship. Just as earlier generations worked to recover this lost piece of their heritage, we are called to protect and restore the stories entrusted to us today.

One of the manuscript’s most memorable concluding reflections reveals Bradford’s lifelong devotion to Scripture:

This concluding reflection from Of Plimoth Plantation expresses Bradford's desire to study Hebrew so he could better understand the Old Testament in its original language, illustrating the Pilgrim governor's lifelong pursuit of biblical learning. ³

From the American Revolution Story (Part 1)

Writing to Abigail Adams on April 26, 1777, John Adams reflected on the tremendous sacrifices being made during the American Revolution. He observed that future generations would never fully know what it cost the present generation to preserve their freedom.

Saturday Evening 26 April 1777

I have been lately more remiss, than usual in Writing to you. There has been a great Dearth of News. Nothing from England, nothing from France, Spain, or any other Part of Europe, nothing from the West Indies. Nothing from Howe, and his Banditti, nothing from General Washington.

There are various Conjectures that Lord How(e) is dead, sick, or gone to England, as the Proclamations run in the Name of Will. Howe only, and nobody from New York can tell any Thing of his Lordship.

I am wearied out, with Expectations that the Massachusetts Troops would have arrived, e’er now, at Head Quarters.—Do our People intend to leave the Continent in the Lurch?……

Is it not intollerable, that the opening Spring, which I should enjoy with my Wife and Children upon my little Farm, should pass away, and laugh at me, for labouring, Day after Day, and Month after Month, in a Conclave, Where neither Taste, nor Fancy, nor Reason, nor Passion, nor Appetite can be gratified?

Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present Generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good Use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.²

John Adams understood that the blessings of liberty come at a cost. In a letter to Abigail Adams during the American Revolution, he reflected that posterity would never fully know the sacrifices made to preserve their freedom.³

His words serve as a reminder that the blessings we enjoy today were often secured through the perseverance, courage, and sacrifice of those who came before us.

Whether preserving liberty, strengthening our churches, raising faithful families, or serving our communities, the work of one generation often becomes the inheritance of the next. What a great reminder this week on the cusp of the Nation’s 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, that we should reflect on the faithful service of those who’ve gone before us.

Thoughts from Matthew Henry and His Bible Commentary

Specifically concerning Genesis 47:13-26, when Joseph is overseeing the care of Egypt and his father’s household while sojourning in Egypt during the seven year famine.

Rev. Henry writes…

Care being taken of Jacob and his family, the preservation of which was especially designed by Providence in Joseph’s advancement, an account is now given of the saving of the kingdom of Egypt too from ruin; for God is King of nations as well as King of saints, and provideth food for all flesh. Joseph now returns to the management of that great trust which Pharaoh had lodged in his hand. It would have been pleasing enough to him to have gone and lived with his father and brethren in Goshen; but his employment would not permit it. When he had seen his father, and seen him well settled, he applied himself as closely as ever to the execution of his office. Note, Even natural affection must give way to necessary business. Parents and children must be content to be absent one from another, when it is necessary, on either side, for the service of God or their generation.⁴

The Apostle Paul describes in Ephesians the roles in marriage between a man and woman as being similar to that of Christ and His Church—that the husband must be willing to die for his wife as Jesus died for us. I once heard it asked—though I don't remember where—"You may be willing to die for someone, but are you willing to live for someone?"
